Youth leadership group planning concert for Japan relief effort
NORTH LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – March 15, 2011 – A concert originally planned as part of the Pulaski County Youth Leadership’s program on discovering self-worth through the arts will now directly benefit relief efforts in Japan. The concert by indie recording artist, Maria Long is scheduled for Saturday, March 19th at 12:45 p.m. at the R.J. Wills Lecture Hall at Pulaski Technical College in North Little Rock. Though this acoustic show is free to the public, the American Red Cross will be on hand to accept donations.
“The concert was to be part of an educational showcase designed to highlight the link between involvement in the arts and a heightened sense of self-worth”, says program coordinator Amie Regester. “And we’ll still cover that, but this adaptability is definitely a quality that we want to teach as well. When you see a need and you’re able to take what you’re already doing and leverage it for an even better cause—that’s a big part of leadership.”
Each of the 22 program participants, who are 9th and 10th graders from various schools all around Pulaski County, have been challenged to invite as many friends as possible to the benefit concert, which is a part of their regularly scheduled Saturday program. The students were excited about the concert before, but now feel a greater interest in promoting it to their friends and family because of the potential they have for assisting others in need.
Mallory Penning, Sophomore at eStem Charter School in Little Rock said, “This is an amazing opportunity to help out—I’ve been looking for an opportunity to serve. It’s important to have a world view when it comes to disaster relief and to remember that whatever affects Japan affects our future too.”
The public, especially ages 12 to 18 are invited to join Pulaski County Youth Leadership this Saturday for the benefit concert at 12:45 p.m.. Doors will open and donations will be collected starting at 12:15 p.m. To listen to Maria’s music visit www.ilike.com/artist/Maria+Long+Music.
The Pulaski County Youth Leadership Institute is made possible through funding from the United States Department of Justice.
